about
home metal ceramics work in progress |
My main drive is the act of creation, making objects out of raw materials, making things: functional things, ornamental things, sculptural things. I like the challenge of trying new techniques, learning, exploring. Even when things continuously stack against me and nothing goes right there is something in the dogged semi self-destructive drive it takes to get beyond those times. There is a simple unexplainable joy when the work and techniques and materials come together and I am left with a finished object. My work is an investigation of craft: technique, functionality, materials and shapes. Occasionally my creations have a story to tell. When I invest an object with a narrative, I prefer to give the viewer the opportunity to discover their own story as they examine my work. It is up to the viewer to decide if there is meaning or depth to be found. I like to create an open ended process allowing the person to read the piece in their own way, perhaps discovering something similar to the narrative I have formed in my mind while making the piece, or alternatively forming their own unique observations. One person may find a story where another may simply see patterns, shapes and colors. This speaks to the importance of the human condition and uniqueness in individuals both showing differences and similarities between people, and gives the opportunity for non-narrative work to create a story with the viewer unbeknownst to the maker. |
